Why Cleaning Your Pool Pump Filter Matters
Your pool pump filter traps debris, dirt, algae, and contaminants before they reach the pump impeller. Over time, this buildup restricts water flow, forcing your pump to work harder. The result: higher energy bills, reduced water clarity, and a pump that wears out years ahead of schedule.
How often should you clean it? During peak swimming season, check your filter basket weekly and do a deep clean every 2–4 weeks depending on usage and debris levels.
What You'll Need
- Garden hose with spray nozzle
- Filter cleaning solution (optional but recommended)
- Soft brush
- Bucket
- Replacement O-ring lubricant
- Towel or rag
Step 1: Turn Off the Pool Pump
Always switch off the pump at the circuit breaker before doing any maintenance. Never open the filter housing while the pump is running — pressurized water can cause serious injury.
Step 2: Release the Pressure
Locate the air relief valve on top of the filter housing and turn it slowly to release built-up pressure. You'll hear a hiss of air — wait until it stops completely before proceeding.
Step 3: Remove and Empty the Pump Basket
Open the pump strainer lid (usually a clear or opaque lid on the front of the pump). Remove the basket and empty out all debris into a trash bag. Rinse the basket thoroughly with a garden hose.
Step 4: Clean the Filter
Depending on your filter type, the cleaning method varies:
Cartridge Filter
- Remove the cartridge from the filter housing
- Rinse from top to bottom with a garden hose — never use a pressure washer, as it damages the filter media
- Soak in filter cleaning solution diluted in a bucket for 8–12 hours for a deep clean
- Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before reinstalling
Sand Filter
- Set the multiport valve to "Backwash" position
- Run the pump for 2–3 minutes until the sight glass runs clear
- Switch to "Rinse" and run for 30 seconds
- Return the valve to "Filter" position
DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filter
- Backwash the filter following the same steps as a sand filter
- Add fresh DE powder through the skimmer after backwashing (follow manufacturer's dosage)
Step 5: Inspect and Lubricate the O-Ring
Before reassembling, inspect the O-ring on the filter lid or housing. Look for cracks, flattening, or debris. Apply a thin coat of O-ring lubricant (never petroleum-based products) to keep it pliable and prevent leaks.
Step 6: Reassemble and Restart
- Reinstall the filter cartridge or close the filter housing securely
- Replace the pump basket and lid
- Open all valves and turn the pump back on
- Open the air relief valve until water (not air) flows out, then close it
- Check for leaks around all fittings
